Hiking Morrow Mountain

Quarry Trail at Morrow Mountain. Such a kid friendly hike 0.6-mile loop. Plenty of parking when you arrive to the trail entrance with picnic tables and bathrooms nearby.

Can you identify which animal tracks these are? Before starting your hike, take a guess! My boys asked one another, observing the shapes of each print while matching them to the correct animal.

During our light North Carolina winters, we’ve seen a few of these tracks in our backyard.

According to alltrails app (btw this app is ah-mazing) it should take the average person only 15 minutes to complete but for our family of nature lovers, it took us about an hour or more. It can be really exciting to run through the narrow paths, but I try to encourage my sons to take the time to see what is surrounding them. Igniting all their senses, and slowing down.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” John 1:3

Along the trail, you will see a shelter made of stone. A large tree branch sticking straight out of it.

Along the trail, there is a shelter made of stone and wood. My Husband noticed that a large branch was standing straight through it. We wondered when it had happened? Was it a recent storm? Their eyes gazed up examining the entire shelter for clues.

“Wow this tree is high, I bet I can climb it like J” -my son

We found small creatures, holding them gently and admiring their beauty. Safely returning it to the ground unharmed. Later we found a frog in a small hole, beside a tree trunk but he was too fast for even my speedy crew.

This trail is marked by blue diamonds along the path. Some areas are narrow, and some areas overgrown making it a really special place. We can tell that not many people come through here. No trash on the floor. Silence and peace.

At some points you cannot see around the bend, where the path may lead. While walking I found myself reflecting on the path that I walk. How sometimes I just have to walk forward, following the markers that I’m going the right way. Trusting in The Most High

Wherever you live, wherever you explore, I hope that you and your family see beauty and feel peace.

Thank you for being here,

Jos.
